A Masai Mara Safari. Masai Mara Game Reserve Is If Anything The Worlds Most Visited Wildlife Park.
The Maasai Mara game sanctuary is probably Kenya's most popular game sanctuary. It is the most famous and most visited game park in Kenya.
Literally all sorts of wildlife can be viewed at the Mara. The reserve abounds with wildlife with about 452 species registered here. Hot air balloon safaris are offered in this park.
The Masai's who inhabit the Mara and its ecosystem are firmly independent people who still treasure tradition and ritual as an integral part of their daily lives. They perceive themselves not just as residents of this area but that they are equally as much a part of the life of the land as the land is a part of their lives.
Customarily, the Masai rarely hunt and living along with animals in harmony is a significant part of their values. Lions and Wildebeest have a vital role in their cultural values as their own herds of cattle. This unique co-existence of man and wildlife makes this Masai land amongst the world's most extraordinary wilderness regions.
Every year the Mara hosts the world's number one natural show, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life giving grass in the north brings around 1.3 million Wildebeest in tandem into a single massive herd. They pour over the border into the Mara, making a breathtaking entry in a surging column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon.
At the Mara River they mass together on the banks before ultimately plunging forwards through the fierce waters, creating frenzy as they wrestle against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of regeneration of the grasslands, but for the predators that pursue the herds.
The Masai Mara has been called the Domain of Lions and these regal and proficient hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is an awesome natural speculate, one place where Masai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, an area of mighty herds and constant cycles of life, death and regeneration.
Wildlife moves freely in and out of the reserve and through neighboring Masai lands. Outside the limits of the reserve, are many small camp sites and lodges, some of which have walking, horse riding and other safari choices.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman escarpment, both regarded as sacred to the Masai, offer high forest hiking opportunities for the fun traveller.
How to get there:
Road entry to Masai Mara is through Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may prefer to fly to the Mara, which is serviced by 4 man airstrips. Daily scheduled flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are on hand. Exclusive Charters also use these airstrips. Accessing the Mara area is really difficult without private transport.
